Suppression of Alternatives

suppression of alternativesOne factor holding up the development of new approaches to degenerative disease is vested interest. There is little motivation for industry or government to develop new testing methodologies for natural treatments such as bio-electrical, nutritional, herbal or plant based. With the emphasis of multi-national companies on developing drugs, there is little profit to be had from cures that are natural in origin or reasonably simple or accessible, because they cannot be patented and little profit can be made from something you can grow on your windowsill or in your garden.

Commercial companies involved in finding treatments for cancer and other diseases have a vested interest in never finding a cure that doesn’t involve expensive drugs or complex procedures they can monopolise. They have a vested interest in your disease.

For example, one early experimenter in the field of cancer and energy was called Royal Rife. He designed a high-resolution microscope capable of magnifying viruses, bacteria and cells up to 30,000 times. He was interested in how specific frequencies of electromagnetic energy influenced specific bacteria. He worked out the ‘Mortal Oscillation Rate’ (M.O.R.) of several types of bacteria. When he zapped them with the right vibratory resonance, they apparently died on the spot.

Rife used his microscope to observe the living activities of micro-organisms, (unlike medical research which often uses dead cells or micro-organisms). His theories of cancer causation were, and still are, controversial to orthodox medicine. He gave cancer a viral etiology by attributing its cause to a micro-organism known as ‘B.X.’, which he isolated from cancer tissues. Through further research he discovered the ‘fatal resonance frequency’ of B.X. and experimented on animals with induced tumours.

As long ago as 1934 he used the Rife Beam Ray in an experiment on 16 terminal cancer patients. They were exposed to the resonance for three minutes a day. 3 months later 14 of the 16 patients were pronounced cured by a staff of 5 medical doctors. This research was suppressed by medical authorities. A special laboratory built to study these discoveries burned to the ground. Rife was dragged through the American courts on trumped-up charges.

These days the use of electromagnetic therapies is heavily legislated, even for use on animals. It is almost impossible for individuals to legally experiment with electro-magnetics or the field of radionics in relation to modern disease. There are many such stories of suppression of alternative and natural treatments for cancer. Personal and professional character assassination, sabotage and legal proceedings are common plots.

Ridicule and accusations of ‘quackery’ or ‘charlatan’ are often leveled at anyone who challenges the authority of scientific medical research by promoting unscientific alternatives, even if they do seem to work. Due to this tunnel vision multiple treatments including alternative, complementary, natural or experimental research are too often marginalised by orthodox medicine.

Natural therapies are overlooked by scientific research because they contain too many variables to verify using their research methodology. Some alternative natural therapies, such as Gerson Therapy claim 80% or more success rates against cancer but these are unsubstantiated by mainstream research organisations or medical science.

A lot of research into alternative treatments that address every aspect of the disease takes place in secret. This is because practices that fall outside of standard medical practice and physicians who offer unconventional treatments may be open to the civil charge of malpractice.

Because of the nature of western medicine, research into modern diseases such as cancer is too often left to global interests who primarily seek new drugs. The primary drive to find new drugs is profit. Multinational, even global pharmaceutical industries do not exist to give us health, but to incorporate chemicals into everything possible at the highest price they can get.

The drug companies claim that their unique drugs are better, stronger, more targeted and safer than natural or simple sources. To some extent they are, but with one in four hospital beds in UK taken up by patients suffering from wrongly or over-prescribed drugs, they often have toxic side effects way in excess of the natural form for that drug.

The cancer field is controlled by the drug industry. Relatively few drug companies employ most of the cancer researchers. Drug company executives sit on the boards of major cancer centres and dominate major oncology organisations. Politics are at work in the pharmaceutical industry. Due to the multinational dimension of drug companies, monopolies have formed that control our freedom of choice through legislation.

Scientific testing of new drugs is controlled by the pharmaceutical industry. It can cost $500 million to get Federal Drugs Authority (FDA) approval for a new drug. Natural substances are stripped of all but their primary active ingredient, which often works better as part of a whole natural substance in the original plant. All drugs so far approved for cancer treatment have toxic side effects.

Regional health authorities in UK are going into debt – one of the main reasons is the expense of cancer drugs. There is increasing evidence that pharmaceutical industries may form ‘cartels’ to keep the price of drugs high.

This is a frightening scenario for anyone who becomes ill. But what worries me most is that it is the same chemical companies putting toxins in our food and in our environment, that are creating the treatments that supposedly cure us from the poisoning.

Alternative Choices

alternative and complementaryIf you go to a Chinese Herbalist for treatment, you are likely to be prescribed – Chinese Herbs. Likewise if you go to a Western ‘allopathic’ doctor, you are likely to be prescribed drugs or surgery, the main tools of the typical Western doctor.

There are many ‘alternative treatments’ available but each practitioner has a vested interest in treating you with their preferred method of intervention. There are very few practitioners in any domain with enough experience and knowledge to direct you, the patient, to a form of intervention that is ideally suited to you and your dis-ease.

Off the top of my head, here are some ‘alternative’ forms of diagnosis and treatment:

Acupuncture
Affirmation and visualisation
Alexander technique
Amino acid supplements
Aromatherapy
Astrology
Autogenic training
Ayurvedic medicine
Biofeedback
Biogenics
Castor oil lymph cleansing
Chakra therapy
Chi Kung
Chinese nutrition and herbalism
Chiropractic
Cold therapy
Colonic irrigation
Colour therapy
Cranial electrical stimulation
Cranial osteopathy
Crystal therapy
Diet and nutrition
Dietary supplements
Dorsal column stimulation
Dr Bach’s flower remedies
Dream therapy / questing
Education and learning
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
Enneagram
Fasting
Feldenkrais therapy
Feng Shui
Folk remedies
Hair analysis
Herbalism
Inversion therapy
Seitai
Shamanic questing
Spiritual healing
Tai Chi
Tibetan medicine

Some ‘alternative medicine’ treatments are gaining credibility without the blessing of doctors. One example of conventional doctor’s treatment being superseded by a popular treatment is in osteoarthritis. Conventional medicine often prescribes a palliative drug to ease the pain which may actually worsen the condition.

Osteoarthritis has been viewed, according to many doctors, as something that we have to put up with as a ‘normal part of ageing’. Now, ingredients that have been used for years in Europe and Asia are combined in a natural remedy that physicians are increasingly prescribing. But such information takes a lot of time to filter through. Even though this particular remedy has been reviewed in the Lancet (McAlindon T. ‘Glucosamine for Osteoarthritis: dawn of a new era?’ Vol.357 No. 9252 p.247 2001) my own doctor was asked for it by a patient and replied “You’d be better off with a gin and tonic.”

Patients are still too infrequently told about complementary or alternative treatments or research. Doctors are supposed to offer patients alternatives as part of ‘informed consent’. Due to the workload of doctors they don’t have time to keep up with the research into every field except their speciality. Important research in other countries is often not translated or even made available to doctors.

Little research exists on simultaneous multiple treatments at levels tuned to the patient because it is impossible to test the validity and reliability of these using current scientific, medical research methodology. Double-blind placebo testing simply does not work in this context.

If your doctor is not familiar with or open to alternatives you are unlikely to even be told what they are. According to a report in the British Medical Journal, half of the UK population uses complementary medicine but doctors are rarely able to advise on such therapies because the research is contradictory or not rigorous enough.

Even when asked directly doctors are unable to offer advice on alternative or complementary options because they often lack any experience, knowledge or training in non-allopathic medicine. Medical history (which reveals a basis for some alternative treatments at least) is rarely taught in medical schools.

Many complementary therapies and alternative healing sources are available. It is rare that you will be prescribed any of these by a doctor, who is usually the first point of contact for a diagnosis, because their interest is focused on providing drugs or surgery as a response to illness.

Patient Advocacy

patient advocacyHealth Services have identified that the needs of patients are central in 21st century medicine. ‘Patient advocacy’ is a term that describes this process that recognises the role of the patient in their own cure.

In alternative medicine, self-healing means first making a decision to take conscious control of a situation, maybe a ‘crisis’, and then making a shift in your emotions and vibrational orientation. Moving from a dis-eased state to a healing one, means leaving behind the old ways of thinking and the emotions that produced the need for the disease. If we use orthodox medicine to remove the ‘effects’ of the disease without changing the underlying patterns that caused it, the disease is likely to re-occur or ‘come out somewhere else’.

The ‘World Cancer Research Fund UK Expert Report: Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective’, suggests that as many as 100,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the UK each year through healthy diet and lifestyle choices alone.

But we are creatures of habit and comfort and rarely change ourselves unless we have some incentive. With an established ‘nanny state’ in UK, combined with a lack of common education about health and ‘self-maintenance’, medicalisation is creeping into many aspects of life. Traditionally our doctors are respected and educated people who know more about our bodies than we do. If our body goes wrong it needs ‘medicine’ which is a highly specialised field.

Several factors are combining to make this ‘deference to authority’ concerning our bodies a dangerous choice. In other cultures where spirit and physic are still joined, such as China, people will actively try to increase their understanding of disease and seek out different treatments on different levels.

With chemical manufacturers producing many harmful rather than nutritional foods the onus has to be on us as individuals to make ‘healthy choices’ and read the labels at least. This would seem straightforward until we enter the world of dietary supplements. In the UK there are still many of these available (although legislation is changing this).

These supplements are not allowed to carry any information as to their use on their labels, which makes preventative self-medicating a problem for those who want to take responsibility for their own well being.

Although patient advocacy is an important move towards ‘self-healing’ it can only occur when the patient has real knowledge of the choices that are available.

Medical Methodology

alternative v complementary medicineAlthough orthodox medicine is slowly letting in complementary therapies, there are still important, but alternative ways, of looking at modern disease that are  incompatible with existing scientific medical models in medicine.

Right now we are stuck between two worlds. In one, the world of medical science tells us that such and such is not proven and therefore not a valid treatment. In the other world of alternative medical models, many things are possible and although they are not proven by medical science – they often work. Mixing medical science with alternative philosophies,  for example Chinese medicine or acupuncture, makes any research difficult. Due to the complexity of Chinese herbal mixtures and the different philosophy of Chinese medicine, tests for the compatibility of orthodox Western treatments with Chinese medicine are only just beginning.

For example, researching the effects of chemical drugs in a ‘Western way’ on the Chinese population involves double-blind testing, with a test group receiving a placebo. This method of testing doesn’t work because Chinese people will naturally search out all possible treatments for a cure, including their local herbalist and this invalidates the research.

Practitioners claim that double-blind testing is not easily conducted on many aspects of Chinese medicine. Giving one group of patients a placebo is morally questionable because the Chinese medical philosophy values treatment of the sick over scientific detachment.

They ask if any medical practitioner can be justified in giving a sick patient a bogus treatment. China is behind the West in state-of-the-art chemical drug therapy but their philosophy of medicine is one that has stood the test of time more than any other, and one that values natural sources of medicine over synthetic. It is also a philosophy that treats the person rather than the illness. Eastern medical systems such as Ayurvedic or Tibetan medicine hold similar difficulties for the methodologies of western reductionism.

Little medical research exists on simultaneous, multiple treatments at levels tuned to the individual patient because it is impossible to test the validity and reliability of these using current medical scientific research methodology.

Despite the extremely rigorous testing of controlled drugs, once they are approved, doctors can prescribe them for any purpose they deem fit. This unapproved use of the drug is known as ‘off label’ use, and it happens frequently. Estimates show that as much as 60% of drugs prescribed by doctors in the US, a staggering billion prescriptions a year are for off label uses. This means that highly potent drugs are being dispensed with no more proof for their efficacy than exists for an alternative remedy.
