Stress and Anxiety

A culture motivated by speed and greed has brought more stress and anxiety to life. A dictionary definition of stress is:

A constraining or impelling force, effort or demand upon physical or mental energy”.

According to the Confederation of British Industries (C.B.I.) illness caused by stress has increased by 500% since the mid 1950’s. Current cultural conditions increase our stress, resulting in effects such as:

·    lack of predictability in life
·    lack of control over external events
·    lack of outlets for frustration

But stress is also an essential part of life. If there were no stress there would be no reaching for growth. There is a functional element to stress that helps us to grow and develop as individuals and a society. If we become overwhelmed by stress, without any outlet for the negative energy it can produce, for prolonged periods of time, then illness and disease will result.

Much of our stress in the modern world comes from ‘cognitive dissonance’ – a feeling that something is wrong but we can’t quite put a finger on what it is. It is defined in psychological terms as: the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioural decisions and attitude change. We know something has to change, that our culture has taken a turn that will result in its own demise, but are in denial or seem unable to do anything about it. This state of being creates a basis of anxiety.

It is how we cope with stressors such as this that determine how much they affect us physically. There is no doubt that for many of us the world is becoming a more complex place and this produces stress and its associated toxins which are part of eventual cell insult and disease if we cannot deal with them.

Our daily diet consists of more than what we eat, drink and breathe. We consume many thousands of messages every day from our culture. Images, conversation, music, TV, radio, newspapers, books and so on. Just once in a while it is a good idea to stand back and consider just what messages we are getting. Certainly mainstream media seems to provide a diet of violence and sensationalism and Western ‘news values’ prefer negative stories of drama, crisis and criminality to more positive or healthy views. Just what impact does the media you consume have on your own perception of the world?

For any consumers of ‘fed culture’ – TV, radio, news, magazines etc. the diet is mostly one of negativity, violence, fear, greed, speed and ‘celebrity’ – the state of personal fulfillment to which we are all supposed to aspire. The media exist for only one reason, to deliver us into the hands of advertisers who seek to manipulate our needs.

Air pollution

Global air pollution coutesy of http://www.nasa.gov

In addition to what we consume through eating and drinking, there are poisons in the air. Although air quality reports are now common, like weather reports, there is relatively little being done to stop the pollution because it operates within the interests of economy and GDP (GNP in US). The Environmental Protection Agency identifies just four main hazards of polluted air: bad ozone levels, particle pollution, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Bad ozone is formed in the Earth’s lower atmosphere when pollutants emitted by industrial processes or cars react chemically to sunlight. They form a gas with three oxygen molecules and have several negative effects on people, especially those who are active outdoors during the summer months or with existing respiratory problems. These are: irritation of respiratory system, causing coughing, throat irritation, uncomfortable chest, reduced lung function especially through vigorous exercise, aggravated asthma, increased sensitivity to allergens and respiratory infections, inflamed and damaged lung lining and scarred lung tissue.

A similar picture emerges with particle pollution in the air. This includes a mixture of solids and liquid droplets. Some particles are emitted directly; others are formed in the atmosphere when other pollutants react. Particles come in a wide range of sizes. Those less than 10 micrometers in diameter are so small that they can get into the lungs, potentially causing serious health problems. Ten micrometers is smaller than the width of a single human hair.

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless, reactive gas, is produced when sulphur-containing fuels such as coal and oil are burned. Sources include power plants and industrial boilers. Generally, the highest levels of sulphur dioxide are near large industrial complexes.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless gas formed when the carbon in fuels does not completely burn. Vehicle exhaust contributes roughly 60 percent of all carbon monoxide emissions nationwide, and up to 95 percent in cities. Other sources include fuel combustion in industrial processes and natural sources such as wildfires. Carbon monoxide levels typically are highest during cold weather, because cold temperatures make combustion less complete and cause inversions that trap pollutants close to the ground.

Tobacco use in all forms is responsible for about 30% of all cancer deaths in developed countries. Passive smoking also carries risks. Unchecked, smoking will cause more than 10 million deaths from cancer (predominantly lung cancer) in the next decade. Tobacco smoking, due to the advertising of unscrupulous multinationals, is still increasing in the Third World. In China smoking increased from 500 billion cigarettes in 1978 to 1,700 billion in 1992. Africa shows a similar picture.

Why is it that only some people get lung cancer from smoking? Genetic predisposition and other lifestyle factors contribute to this. It has been estimated that the average city dweller inhales the equivalent of several cigarettes a day in the form of air pollution. A person who gets regular exercise, eats wisely and exercises in fresh air, but still smokes a few roll-ups, may be less at risk to tobacco induced cancer than a city dweller who drives everywhere and eats ready meals, but doesn’t smoke. It is an indication that there are many factors at work in insulting our cells. Degenerative disease is complex disease and there are unique variables with every case.

Radiation

radiation
Fukushima

Radiation from the sun is an increasing risk through the depleted ozone layer surrounding the Earth. Skin based cancers are becoming common. Radiation has increased many-fold in the modern world. There is little research done into the effects of any of the common radiating devices in our homes and workplaces. Research into the effects of background radiation from power lines, microwaves, mobile phones and their towers, computers and other sources indicates there are dangers, but these are largely ignored and the information is often suppressed.

Microwaves have been shown to alter the molecular structure of food and destroy essential amino acids in the process. They are so convenient we
have turned a deaf ear to this information. Research has also shown cause for concern with mobile phone radiation. The results of thousands
of tons of depleted uranium strewn over the various battlefields of the earth have yet to be seen, as is the results of the Fukushima disaster on our oceans.

Roger Coghill’s research shows that every living creature has a unique electromagnetic field and that any other fields can have an effect on it.

All living creatures emit electrical living fields. Scientists are only just starting to realise how important these are for well-being. Unfortunately as a result of modern technologies, we’re being increasingly exposed to all kinds of radiation that can disturb and weaken our electromagnetic fields. This interferes with and lowers our immunity.”

Patient Advocacy

patient advocacyHealth Services have identified that the needs of patients are central in 21st century medicine. ‘Patient advocacy’ is a term that describes this process that recognises the role of the patient in their own cure.

In alternative medicine, self-healing means first making a decision to take conscious control of a situation, maybe a ‘crisis’, and then making a shift in your emotions and vibrational orientation. Moving from a dis-eased state to a healing one, means leaving behind the old ways of thinking and the emotions that produced the need for the disease. If we use orthodox medicine to remove the ‘effects’ of the disease without changing the underlying patterns that caused it, the disease is likely to re-occur or ‘come out somewhere else’.

The ‘World Cancer Research Fund UK Expert Report: Food, Nutrition and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective’, suggests that as many as 100,000 cases of cancer could be prevented in the UK each year through healthy diet and lifestyle choices alone.

But we are creatures of habit and comfort and rarely change ourselves unless we have some incentive. With an established ‘nanny state’ in UK, combined with a lack of common education about health and ‘self-maintenance’, medicalisation is creeping into many aspects of life. Traditionally our doctors are respected and educated people who know more about our bodies than we do. If our body goes wrong it needs ‘medicine’ which is a highly specialised field.

Several factors are combining to make this ‘deference to authority’ concerning our bodies a dangerous choice. In other cultures where spirit and physic are still joined, such as China, people will actively try to increase their understanding of disease and seek out different treatments on different levels.

With chemical manufacturers producing many harmful rather than nutritional foods the onus has to be on us as individuals to make ‘healthy choices’ and read the labels at least. This would seem straightforward until we enter the world of dietary supplements. In the UK there are still many of these available (although legislation is changing this).

These supplements are not allowed to carry any information as to their use on their labels, which makes preventative self-medicating a problem for those who want to take responsibility for their own well being.

Although patient advocacy is an important move towards ‘self-healing’ it can only occur when the patient has real knowledge of the choices that are available.

Medical Methodology

alternative v complementary medicineAlthough orthodox medicine is slowly letting in complementary therapies, there are still important, but alternative ways, of looking at modern disease that are  incompatible with existing scientific medical models in medicine.

Right now we are stuck between two worlds. In one, the world of medical science tells us that such and such is not proven and therefore not a valid treatment. In the other world of alternative medical models, many things are possible and although they are not proven by medical science – they often work. Mixing medical science with alternative philosophies,  for example Chinese medicine or acupuncture, makes any research difficult. Due to the complexity of Chinese herbal mixtures and the different philosophy of Chinese medicine, tests for the compatibility of orthodox Western treatments with Chinese medicine are only just beginning.

For example, researching the effects of chemical drugs in a ‘Western way’ on the Chinese population involves double-blind testing, with a test group receiving a placebo. This method of testing doesn’t work because Chinese people will naturally search out all possible treatments for a cure, including their local herbalist and this invalidates the research.

Practitioners claim that double-blind testing is not easily conducted on many aspects of Chinese medicine. Giving one group of patients a placebo is morally questionable because the Chinese medical philosophy values treatment of the sick over scientific detachment.

They ask if any medical practitioner can be justified in giving a sick patient a bogus treatment. China is behind the West in state-of-the-art chemical drug therapy but their philosophy of medicine is one that has stood the test of time more than any other, and one that values natural sources of medicine over synthetic. It is also a philosophy that treats the person rather than the illness. Eastern medical systems such as Ayurvedic or Tibetan medicine hold similar difficulties for the methodologies of western reductionism.

Little medical research exists on simultaneous, multiple treatments at levels tuned to the individual patient because it is impossible to test the validity and reliability of these using current medical scientific research methodology.

Despite the extremely rigorous testing of controlled drugs, once they are approved, doctors can prescribe them for any purpose they deem fit. This unapproved use of the drug is known as ‘off label’ use, and it happens frequently. Estimates show that as much as 60% of drugs prescribed by doctors in the US, a staggering billion prescriptions a year are for off label uses. This means that highly potent drugs are being dispensed with no more proof for their efficacy than exists for an alternative remedy.

The Power of Immunity

immunity to diseaseThe diseases of old that so ravished our Western cultures are mostly cured. Western medicine has produced literally world saving vaccines and antibiotics. It has created drugs and surgical techniques that do amazing things. It has virtually eliminated all the serious communicable diseases  such as leprosy, plague, tuberculosis, tetanus, syphilis, rheumatic fever, pneumonia, meningitis, polio, septicaemia. There are very few women dying in childbirth compared to the past.

Western medicine has been, and is, a triumph in the face of these problems that worried us back then the way cancer and heart disease worry us today. Even the big medical problems of the 1930’s and 40’s and before have literally vanished in the First World.

But the age of infectious disease has given way to the age of chronic disorders. The major killers today are heart and vascular disease, chronic degenerative diseases and cancer, largely incurable and increasing in incidence. The fourth biggest killer is now rumoured to be medical treatment itself.

The strategies that worked so well for all but eliminating acute infectious diseases just don’t seem to work for chronic and degenerative conditions. Patients can be at best increasingly ‘patched up’ by orthodox treatments but at spiraling health care costs.

“The prevalence of asthma, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, immune deficiency syndrome, HIV and a host of other debilitating conditions is increasing. Conventional biomedicine – so strikingly successful in the treatment of overwhelming infections, surgical and medical emergencies and congenital defects, has been unable to stem the tide of these conditions”.
James Gordon M.D., Washington, D.C.

In brief, modern medical research is still using the techniques established to cure serious communicable diseases. They aren’t working well on modern degenerative diseases like cancer and heart disease, the two biggest killers in the western world.

All medical drugs are toxic and adding toxicity to an already failing immune system can do little more than hide or block a symptom that is likely to appear elsewhere if not cured. The causes of modern degenerative disease are complex and varied and need treating with similar scope at an holistic level, that is, tuned to the individual. There are vested interests at work in the medical treatment of disease – the big companies want expensive pills or treatments that will create profits for them – so many simple remedies, often cheap or freely available, go unresearched.
